Lumentra Inc, a cleantech company that develops nanomaterial solutions for the LED lighting industry and provides accredited testing and measurement services for lighting companies, has acquired Lighting Sciences Canada (LSC).  Based in Waterloo, Ontario, LSC is the longest serving test and measurement service provider for lighting industries in Canada.

“LSC’s acquisition is at the core of our commitment to provide highest quality and fully accredited test and measurement services to the Solid State Lighting (SSL) industry”, says Dr. Venkat Venkataramanan, the president of Lumentra.  “Merging the two testing laboratories creates a full suite of characterization services for the LED industry.  Lumentra is now a one-stop solution provider for LED product development and performance certification”.

The acquisition of LSC adds to Lumentra’s test and measurement capabilities.  Lumentra is NVLAP accredited by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for a variety of test methods for traditional and SSL industries.  It provides third-party testing services for lighting manufacturers for Energy Star, Lighting Facts and DesignLights Consortium qualifications. Besides photometry, Lumentra also provides thermal, electrical, and environmental testing services and assists luminaire manufacturers with computerized optical modeling, including lens and reflector designs and illumination modeling services.

“Merging with Lumentra is the logical step in the evolution of LSC”, says Dr. Frank Lin, the co-founder of LSC. “Lumentra is an offshoot of the University of Toronto. Combining over three decades of LSC’s experience in the field, with Lumentra’s modern facilities and research expertise helps create a robust slew of services for the entire lighting industry” adds Dr. Lin.

Lumentra offers the highest quality measurement services for discrete LEDs, lamps, LED light engines, arrays and luminaires. It provides accredited testing that help manufacturers qualify their ballasts under the new US Department of Energy regulations. Lumentra also offers a variety of services for signage and display industries, including flat panel displays, illuminated signs and backlit displays.  Besides lighting Lumentra’s customer base includes automotive, medical, military, electronics manufacturing, industrial vision and mining industries as well as academia.  Lumentra’s staff are actively involved in the development of IES, CIE, ISO, CSA and UL standards relevant to lighting industries.

“Our commitment to our customers extends beyond test and measurement services.  We focus on providing total solutions for LED luminaire manufacturers and on helping hem develop leading edge energy efficient lighting products.  This merger strengthens our expertise and equipment in fulfilling that commitment”, adds Venkataramanan.
